Chicago Lots, Diagonal Marks

Three or four years ago on the CTA Green Line I noticed the abandoned lots in the south side where people would just circumvent the longer route of the sidewalk and carve out their own paths through the unused space.
I just remembered them today.

This happens in Baltimore as well. (and many other areas as well)
